Today you are going to learn how to reduce lag in Battlefield 3 for all three platforms (PC, PS3, Xbox 360) There are far more options for reducing lag on PC, namely because of the much bigger range of hardware and software configurations available. However, you can still cut down lag on console platforms too.
Reduce Battlefield 3 Lag for PS3 & Xbox 360
- Make sure your console firmware is updated to the latest version. This can be done easily from within the Xbox 360 and PS3 dashboards.
- Swtich to a hard wired connection if possible. Hard wired Internet beats wireless every time in terms of speed.
- If you are using wireless make sure your wireless router is set on the right channel, and also that the computer it connects through (if applicable) has up to date drivers.
- If you have fiddled around with the wireless or network settings on your console in the past try setting them to default again, then work around from there.
- The placement of your wireless router is hugely important; make sure there is a clear signal path free of interference points such as cordless phones and microwave ovens.
- Shut down all background applications that use Internet bandwidth. Especially important is turning off file sharing programs or software that constantly auto-updates. Background programs can hog a lot of system resources and Internet bandwidth and will result in poor gaming speed online.
- Update your network hardware drivers to the latest version.
- Patch Battlefield 3 to the latest version.
- Switch to a cabled connection from wireless if possible. This will always yield superior performance.
- If you are using wireless then use quality wireless components (both card and router)
- Ensure that there is a clear broadcast signal for your wireless connection free of interference.
- Use cable and not DSL Internet if possible.
- Pick servers located as close to your home as possible.
The only two things which are really going to really make a difference on the list for PC are no6 and no8.
ReplyDeleteFor the first one, you have to understand that most network hardware will let the information which needs to be in real time first, which mean games and VOIP go first. The only way it could be a problem is if you are downloading loads of stuff. Having MSN or Skype on shouldn't really cause any problems.
No 2 doesnt really do a difference, maybe on stabilty but not on lag.
No 3 is required to play and won;t really do much difference
No 4- From experience, if you have a correct signal, the only disadvantage wifi has against wired is stability. The connection will work well and then somethings starts creating interference and you will either get a ping of 999 or time out. Although if the whole thing is set up properly it souldn't be much of a problem.
No5- From experience, no need to pay too much. I bought the cheapest router and adaptor I could find and I am not using them in what we could call ideal conditions and I get no lag. It should be noted though that its wireless N, not Wireless G
Also, no7 is misleading. Both are as good, you just have decent up and down speeds and you will have no lag.

Wired is faster, there are no two ways about it. ReplyDeleteAs far as cable/DSL, in general cable networks provide better speeds. This may be changing, but any improvement in speed has to be considered.
With regards to point 1, I clearly stated too that it's things like active file downloads that need to be switched off. I never mentioned MSN or Skype in particular, probably could have worded thing sbetter but meh.
I know what I am talking about, and can guarantee that anyone who follows those steps will get less lag in BF3.
